Mongol Geo-Tools

I have been working in Mongolia since 2009 as a GIS specialist. Below are a few tools that might be useful to others working here. These are solutions to issues that I encountered when I started work:

TOOLS, STANDARDS, AND TUTORIALS:
1) Tutorial for using Mongolian text in ArcView (4.7mb-zip)
2) Tutorial for modeling and mapping local precipitation(1.4mb-zip)
3) Map projection standards optimized for Mongolia (12kb-zip)
4) GPS settings and operation in Mongolia

Currently, I am creating a master copy of public data for Mongolia (to distribute to local government and nonprofits). I am collecting data files for proprietary and free mapping programs. If you are interested in contributing to this project, please contact me.

If you are looking for GIS contacts in Mongolia working on NGO projects and public data, please contact me directly. I will gladly point you in the direction of local experts.

  1. Hello, How are you doing???

  2. Hi Heather –
I may accept a short-term consulting job in Mongolia and am searching for a good source for GIS basemaps. I’ve downloaded your prj file (thank you very much!) and have just begun the hunt for GIS data. My job will be geological in nature and I’ll be hunting geological-related data, but need some of the base data to get started.

I’ve enjoyed the insights on your blog! Thanks for sharing!

  3. Hi Heather,
I too am doing GIS work in Mongolia this summer (at Lake Hovsgol National Park). I am having trouble finding base layers like the commenter above–do you have any suggestions? Best case scenario would have the following:
    1. Resolution – good at 1 – 50,000 or better
    2. Topographic detail including, at a minimum, 100′ contour lines.
    3. Ground cover – aline/sub-alpine, forest, grassland, water, urban
    4. Resolution adequate to show Hatgal and Hankh street layout
    Thanks for any help!
    Erica

    • I emailed a friend who might, I mostly have central Mongolia data at that scale and little of it exists unless you make it yourself. I will post it here if I get it. If you find some, you can email it me and I will post it here, since I get a lot of people finding this site in search!
